Spectrum of Dirk Pleyer: Change and Possibility

A Guest at the “

” project space KIMGO

John-Schehr-Straße 1

To conclude the exhibition series *Spectrum of Life*, Dirk Pleyer explores, at the KIMGO project space, the forces that shape our life stories beyond biological constants: change, chance, and the limitations of our possibilities. Human life is a constant flow of unpredictable events and opportunities. Often, it is fleeting moments or chance encounters that set a completely new course. In doing so, we are constantly navigating a field of tension—we have the freedom to choose, yet the options for variation are limited within our system.

In his installation, Pleyer makes this existential process of choosing and exchanging physically tangible. The starting point is 200 pink-colored image modules that initially flood the space with an almost naive, hopeful monochromatic hue. This color represents an optimistic primal state, a field of possibilities yet to be explored.

At the heart of the exhibition, however, is active engagement. Pleyer invites visitors to interact with the existing system. The pink modules can be exchanged for works from the ALBUM K ff. series. This playful ritual reflects the mechanics of life: every decision to choose a new element simultaneously means saying goodbye to another.

A key aspect of Pleyer’s concept is the reduction of variance. The more images that have already been swapped, the more firmly the new panorama takes shape. The possibilities for change diminish as the process unfolds, just as the scope for variation narrows over the course of a lifetime due to decisions made and opportunities missed. What begins as a playground of naivety transforms, through conscious exchange, into a complex, final landscape.

Pleyer thus uses the gallery as a laboratory for the course of life. The exhibition demonstrates that while we are actors in a system of chance and choice, every change leaves irreversible traces. Change and Possibility is thus a profound plea for a conscious approach to the opportunities that the spectrum of life offers us.
